Picnic/Screening: SANS SOLEIL (1983)

Cinema Out of the Box presents Chris Marker’s great classic, SANS SOLEIL (1983), on Parc Mont-Royal with a bicycle-powered generator.

The French film is an experimental documentary that uses stock footage, clips from Japanese movies and shows, excerpts from other films, as well as Marker's own documentary footage to meditate on the nature of human memory and how it influences the perception of personal and global histories.

Criterion's Jonathan Rosenbaum writes of the film as "a cinematic essay and travel film made up of asides and digressions that form a portrait of late twentieth-century civilization, Marker takes us from rural Iceland in 1965 to Japan in the early 1980s, with fleeting references to Africa, Île-de-France, and the Bijagos Islands."
