Under the Franco dictatorship (1935-1975), critical thinking and expression were prohibited, and artists devised corporeal mechanisms as a form of protest and resistance. Eugènia Balcells, Fina Miralles and Esther Ferrer are pioneer women artists of their time and were the only ones at that time documenting performance and/or bodies in movement through Umatic ¾, NTSC, 16mm and Super 8. This selection of work by the fours artists is presented for the first time in Spain and internationally. These artworks encourage transgressive and emancipatory acts (even if transitory) in the context of systemic chauvinist Francoism. The latter reinforced the objectification of women’s bodies and provoked a kind of disembodiment. In their work, it is precisely through kinesthesia (the sense of the corporeal position and movement) that the body engages its surroundings to gather knowledge about itself and the world and intervene in it. There is an emphasis on the sensorial that provides original access to the self. These forms of feminist liberation emphasize the body as the central aspect of agency. They are sensorial instructions for feminist political statements.

[This work] explores the contrast between the public language of TV and the personal scenes of bodies in movement in intimate and personal spaces.

Duna [Dune] and Deixada Anar de Cargols [Liberating Snails] (Fina Miralles, b. 1950, Sabadell, Catalonia) are part of the series Translacions [Movements/Passages] (1973, Super 8 film transferred to video) a group of actions consisting in physically transferring elements of nature from their usual context to an unusual one. And in Petjades[Footprints] (1976, Super 8 film transferred to video) the artist put together cork and foam to build up the words: “Fina” on one shoe and “Miralles” on the other and print the letters of her name on the ground.

Acciones Corporales [Corporal actions] 1975 (Esther Ferrer, b. 1937, Donostia/San Sebastián, Basque Country) is a series of the artist's most emblematic filmed performances where she explores personal and intimate space through her own body movement. This is a selection of three of them: Recorrer los muros con contacto [Go over the walls with contact], Huellas/Espacio/Sonido [Footprints/Space/Sound] et Abrirme/Salir al mundo exterior a mi cuerpo [Open myself/Go out into the world outside my body].
