Facilities
The Moving Image Research Laboratory (MIRL) explores developments in moving image technologies and our understanding of the moving body, through a moving image analysis lab for the comparative analysis of moving images in several media formats, a data processing lab for the digitization of print and visual materials from the researchers’ specific domains, and a collection of 16mm films.
These films from well-known directors and works to industrial, management, and educational films, DVDs, games and VHS tapes. The Moving Image Analysis Laboratory is a space for the projection and analysis of moving image media in a variety of formats and screening configurations.

Analysis Lab
The Moving Image Analysis Laboratory is a space for the projection and analysis of moving image media in a variety of formats and screening configurations. The lab features a Kinoton 35mm/16mm variable speed film projector and a Christie HD digital video projector, which supports all professional video and digital projection formats. Seating capacity is 15-20 people, and the space can also be converted into an installation space with four screens on the side walls for digital video projection. It also has portable Super 8 projection capacity, multiple gaming consoles and systems, and a collection of obsolete media, part of our cabinet of forgotten enthusiasm, available for experimental and research practices. It is also home to the MIRL’s large collection of 16mm films. To consult the collection, or to discuss booking the MIRL lab for a screening or installation send an email to contact@mirl.lab.mcgill.ca.
Data Lab
The Data Lab is the hub for research activities at the MIRL. It is a flexible space with computer work stations and facilities for hosting talks and research-creation activities. It also serves as a seminar and meeting room, and as a research space for MIRL students, postdocs, visiting artists and associate researchers. It also holds a large collection of DVDs and videos of works of screendance.
