WAKE UP! Hard Femme Intimacy
An outdoor screening of Two-Spirit films followed by a conversation with Tiohtià:ke-based Indigenous artists Dayna Danger and Beric Manywounds. This screening, as part of Indigenous Awareness Week at McGill will take the work of these two artists and put it in direct conversation with works they admire, and that speak to their practice. The screening of their works will be followed by a conversation with the artists on their inspiration, connection and energy in creative practice as it relates to artists that have come before, and who are still in dialogue with their contemporary work. Animating the Good and the Bad
This program is part of a larger tour of films from the Winnipeg Film Group’s Distribution Collection. The tour, "Found in Translation", presents an array of creative short films, telling uniquely Canadian stories. Animation can be a very effective medium for social criticism and satire, in which caricature serves as a weapon and parody is a tool for exposing the follies of social conventions and the corruption of authority. The films in this program are sometimes funny, sometimes irreverent, and sometimes dystopic in their rejection of normative ideologies. They are largely progressive and inventive, both artistically and formally, as well as politically and socially engaged.

Histories, Fantasies + All Possible Futures: Films at Pervers/cité
An outdoor screening of a selection of short films that take trans* subjects through history and sometimes surreality into our imperfect present and beyond. These films are documentary and fantasy; based in stories and emergent histories, they mark our bodies and memory in a world where there is indeed a multitude of resonant narratives that guide and pull us forward into our own. The Centennial Flight 百年翔
A one-night site-specific screening of TYRUS - A Documentary Film (dir. Pamela Tom 2017), preceded by A Drownful Brilliance of Wings (dir. Sofia Bohdanowicz and Gillian Sze 2016), and followed by the open veins a century ago (Howl Arts Collective 2015), to take place in Montreal's Place Sun Yat-Sen, a public square situated in the heart of Chinatown. The Feeling of Falling: Queer Ecologies, Uncertain Spaces
Film Screening - The Feeling of Falling - Queer Ecologies, Uncertain Spaces in the Hague, Netherlands. Nikki Forrest, a Montreal based artist and curator, will present a one-hour experimental video program of recent short works from the independent artist run centres Groupe Intervention Video and Videographe based in Montreal. The program will explore intersections of movement practice, audiovisual media and environmental relations. The works are connected by a playful focus on Queer Ecologies, drawing out on alternative and marginal histories of media form and practice, including the critical importance of intersectional identities, sustainable support, DIY and micro-budget production and other material practices. In collaboration with iii and The Reading Room, and Christoph Brunner, Alanna Thain, Nikki Forrest, Sissel Marie Tonn and Jonathan Reus Brodsky.

Cinéma en plein air / lancement de résidence
From September 7th to October 7th, Wild City Mapping (Maia Iotzova and Dominique Ferraton) will occupy and transform an underused green space in Hochelaga as part of Espace libre pour la culture, Conscience urbaine's artist in residence program. The residence will launch on September 9th at 8pm with a screening of the documentary film GREEN DREAM (50 min, 2015) which contemplates nature's place within the city. The screening is in collaboration with Cinema Out of the Box, and their mobile bike-powered cinema.

DIRE SKATE + GIRL POWER
Screening under the Van Horne Viaduct, as a part of 100 Dessins Dessous, a series of free events offered through July that involve collaborative exchange between community members, inviting everyone to join in imagining the future of a city park that will occupy the space under the Van Horne Viaduct, and to put the proposed skate park plan in context. The screening is the first installation of the "Agora des Possibles," a collective project between Conscience urbaine, Les Amis du Champ des Possibles, Association de Skateboard de Montréal (ASM), Pépinière & Co., Temps libre Mile End, and realized in partnership with the City of Montreal. We are showcasing the films DIRE SKATE, a short film directed by Dan Mathieu documenting Montreal's skateboard scene and the need for high-quality skate parks funded by the city, and GIRL POWER, a documentary seven years in the making that presents female grafitti writers from fifteen cities across the globe, alongside the personal story of the film's director, Sany, a Czech grafitti-writer. From 5pm, SILO, an interactive sound installation created by Audiotopie (http://www.audiotopie.com/) will be on site to test the sound environment under the Van Horne viaduct.

How might the dispersed notions of diaspora be brought to light by screen? What does a fruitful relation between diasporic expression and representation via moving and time-based image media look like? COMMON ALIENS: Art and Shorts Outdoor Film Screening is a collaborative curation of 12 short films by North American people of colour, featuring an eclectic array of styles. The featured Artworks & Shorts range in ways of expression and storytelling from filmmaker’s autobiographical insights to experimental slivers of their personal or observed diasporic experiences. Comment un projecteur de cinéma peut-il éclairer les notions dispersées de la diaspora ? Comment se manifeste une relation fructueuse entre l’expression et la représentation diasporiques par le biais du film et des médias ? ÉTRANGERS COMMUNS : Courts-métra(n)ges sous les étoiles est une programmation collaborative de 12 courts-métrages réalisés par des personnes de couleur d’Amérique du Nord, représentant un éventail éclectique de styles. Les œuvres à l’affiche déclinent sous différentes formes d’expression et de narration, des points de vue autobiographiques aux bribes expérimentales tirées de leurs expériences diasporiques personnelles ou observées.

Please join Cinema Out of the Box and East Asian Studies Students’ Association for a moonlight screening of Studio Ghibli’s 2013 adaptation of Japan’s oldest extant folk narrative, THE TALE OF PRINCESS KAGUYA! Master animator Takahata Isao (GRAVEYARD OF FIREFLIES, POM POKO) renders the tale of a radiant moon princess emerging from a stalk of bamboo in a style indebted to traditional Japanese art from various premodern eras, yet with a breathtaking modern edge. Nominated for the 2014 Academy Award for Best Animated Film, THE TALE OF PRINCESS KAGUYA is a sophisticated example of anime’s development as a medium of feature filmmaking in Japan and a touching, emotionally complex twist on the social pressure to marry faced by fairy tale princesses the world over. A man from earth uses magical gauntlets, rap songs and dancing to survive in a preposterously hostile planet as he searches for the evil scientist who transported him there. One part absurdist auteur animation, one part science fiction hip hop musical, one part demented and hallucinating Super Nintendo, Apollo Gauntlet is a hilarious and mind-boggling epic masterpiece created entirely by Myles Langlois (Royal Art Lodge) in his rural Manitoba basement. Originally appearing as an independent serial on Youtube in 10-minute installments, Apollo Gauntlet was purchased in 2012 by the corporate online comedy platform Rugburn, who idiotically re-edited and repackaged Langlois’ magnum-opus into hundreds of nearly unwatchable one-minute increments. Cinema Out of the Box restores this crazed and criminally under-appreciated Manitoba masterwork to its full 80 minutes of maximized insanity. Make These Gauntlets Powerful!

C’est à 30 ans, après avoir parcouru la planète, qu’Olivier et Mélanie réalisent qu’ils entretiennent des liens avec le bout du monde alors qu’ils n’ont jamais posé les pieds dans une réserve indienne, chez-eux, au Canada. Le jeune couple décide alors de parcourir la Côte-Nord du Québec à vélo afin de mieux comprendre les relations entre Québécois et Premières Nations. D’où vient cette méconnaissance des Autochtones, alors que des études montrent que plus de la moitié des Canadiens français ont au moins un ancêtre amérindien? Pourquoi les préjugés sont-ils toujours aussi tenaces? Comment les choses peuvent-elles évoluer? De rencontres fortuites en rencontres programmées, la quête des cinéastes croisera celle, surprenante, d’un Innu parti à la recherche de ses ancêtres en Normandie et la démarche bouleversante de la sœur du caporal Lemay, tué lors de la crise d’Oka en 90.

Mélanie and Olivier decided to cycle the North Shore of Quebec, Canada, to better understand the complex relationships that exist between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people. This quest for identity would push them to travel deep inside themselves and to faraway lands. Their encounters, both planned and spontaneous, include the surprising tale of an Innu man in search of his ancestors in Normandy, and the heart-wrenching story of the sister of Corporal Marcel Lemay, who was killed during the 1990 Oka crisis.

PICNIC/SCREENING avec GIV: AFTERGLOW
Le Groupe Intervention Vidéo (GIV) célèbre son 40e anniversaire en 2015. Intitulée « Afterglow », cette programmation regroupe des vidéos créées au cours des quatre dernières décennies, soit de 1979 à 2014, et représente un tout petit échantillon d’une impor- tante collection qui comprend plus de 1200 œuvres de 330 artistes. « Afterglow » présente des œuvres réalisées avec de l’équipement obsolète et nous fait découvrir à travers un parcours chronologique les tendances et thèmes récurrents de l’art vidéo réalisé par des femmes. Plusieurs de ces œuvres sont des témoi- gnages d’artistes offrant des performances pour et avec la caméra. « Afterglow » met en lumière des œuvres à la jonction de l’art et de l’activisme, un objectif important du mandat du GIV.
Cet évènement est présenté en collaboration avec l’atelier Affective Encounters: Tools of Interruption for Activist Media Practices, du SSHRC de l’Université McGill. Il prendra place à 20 h (16 août 2015) au Parc Lafontaine, plus précisément au bord du lac situé au sud-ouest du parc, et la projection commencera à 20 h 30. Groupe Intervention Vidéo (GIV) is celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2015. This program, entitled ‘Afterglow’ groups together videos created throughout four decades, ranging from 1979 to 2014. This curated snapshot is merely a glimpse of our collection, which includes over 1200 works by 330 artists. ‘Afterglow’ features several works created with obsolete pieces of equipment. As we make our way up through the years chronologically, ‘Afterglow’ is also about some major themes and tendencies key to video art as practiced by women. Many of the works foreground the video maker’s own experience, offering performances for/with the camera. ‘Afterglow’ highlights works that fuse art and activism, an important principle of GIV’s mandate.
This event is presented in collaboration with the SSHRC Workshop Affective Encounters: tools of interruption for activist media practices, McGill University. It will be held at 8:00pm, 16th August 2015, at Park Lafontaine on the lake in the southwest corner of the park, and the projection will start at 8:30pm. En visionnant ces films dans l’écologie urbaine du Champ des Possibles, nous élargirons notre exploration des thèmes abordés. “Green Dream” est un film d’auteur qui contemple la place de la nature dans la ville. La cinéaste nous invite à explorer les espaces verts à l’état sauvage dans les villes où elle a habité—en passant par les champs sauvages de Sofia, en Bulgarie et les parcs impeccables de Vancouver en Colombie-Britannique pour arriver enfin dans un parc géré par la communauté (Le Champ des Possibles) à Montréal, Québec. Le film se veut une méditation sur comment on prend soin de ces zones vertes dans le paysage urbain. Green Dream est aussi un documentaire sur l’épanouissement personnel et la vie avec des racines qui s’étendent entre différentes cultures. Le film prend quelques tournures surprenantes alors que la cinéaste s’interroge sur sa propre relation avec la nature et tente de concilier les approches culturelles contradictoires des gens envers les espaces verts autour d’elle. “To Taste the Ground” est un documentaire lyrique incarnant le cycle des saisons tel que vécu par une petite ferme biologique en Colombie Britannique. Cette ferme isolée, située dans le canyon du Fraser, n’est branchée à aucun réseau, s’alimentant d’énergie solaire et d’eau provenant des montagnes environnantes. La relation entre les fermiers et leur environnement en est une d’égalité et de respect, et la caméra révèle une expérience viscérale du lieu et du passage du temps. Les saisons, ainsi que leur impact sur le paysage, incarnent un personnage vivant, et les fermiers s’adaptent à leur rythme changeant.

Bring your blankets and join the wild flowers, bees and grass for a screening of the documentary “Green Dream” and the short film “To Taste the Ground” at Le Champ Des Possibles (a beautiful urban meadow in the Mile End).
These two independent films collectively generate an immersive 74-minute exploration of connectivity between humans and the environment – an exploration that will continue to expand as we view these films in the urban ecology of Le Champ des Possibles. The two filmmakers, Maia Iotzova and Shannon Harris will be in attendance to answer your questions. Representatives of Les Amis du Champ des Possibles (http://amisduchamp.com/) as well as Wild City Mapping (www.wildcitymapping.org) will also be present for the screening.

Green Dream is an author documentary that contemplates nature’s place within the city. Maia Iotzova takes the viewer on a journey from the wild fields of Sofia, Bulgaria to the manicured parks of Vancouver, Canada and, finally, to a community-managed park (Le Champ des Possibles) in Montreal. Observing the cities where she has lived, the filmmaker tries to piece together the urban and the wild, two realities that have traditionally been seen as opposites. Green Dream is also a film about maturing as a person and living with one’s roots spread between different cultures. The film takes some surprising turns as the author questions her own relationship with nature and tries to reconcile the conflicting cultural approaches that people have towards the green spaces around her. To Taste the Ground is a lyrical documentary that viscerally moves through the seasonal life cycle of a small organic farm in British Columbia, Canada. The remote farm exists off grid in the Fraser Canyon with solar power and water that flows from the surrounding mountains. The relationship between the farmers and their environment is one of equality and respect and the camera embodies this capturing an experience of season and place. The seasons moving through the landscape embody a character in itself and the farmers live and move within its rhythm.

In collaboration with Alanna Thain’s class, David Lynch in Relation ~ come get weird with us! This Tuesday (September 15th 2015) we’ll be screening David Lynch’s first feature-length film, Eraserhead – a surrealist body horror film set in a desolate industrial cityscape. The screening will be held at Le Champs des Possibles, a perfectly beautiful and creepy wild urban space in the Mile End behind the bereft textile buildings on De Gaspé. Ce Mardi (11 août 2015), on vous présente deux filmes qui sont en ligne avec nos mandats. Lucid Noon, Sunset Blush (Midi lucide, rougeur crépuscule) vous invite dans un voyage hyper-réel fantastique du sud états-unisien comme vous n’avez jamais vu. Quand Netflix a fait faire son coming out, bébé-gai ado Micah de 17 ans s’enfuit de chez elle au Texas pour la grande ville. Une escouade de hard-femmes black qui volent des bikes et dominent des white boys l’accepte et l’amène à son repaire souterrain. Lucid Noon, Sunset Blush offre une vue franche aux vies quotidiennes – de house booty de la drame entre gouines, les premiers clients, des vols de vélo, fétiches d’ongles et des plottes à saveur de mangue. Un fantaisie radical afro-futuriste qui se centre sur des femmes queer et black d’une manière honnête et sans objectification. Cruising (1980) est un thriller de William Friedkin. Le film traite d’un tueur en série qui cible des gais, surtout ceux qui fréquentent la scène cuir. Apportez des amis et des collations! Cinema Out of the Box and Pervers/cité – a wonderful summer festival that works to connect a range of queer communities in Montreal – are collaborating this coming Tuesday (11th August 2015) to bring you two queer films at Beaver Lake! Lucid Noon, Sunset Blush takes you on a hyper-real queer fantasy like you’ve never seen in the South before. Outed by Netflix and kicked out by her parents, 17-year bb gay Micah flees her South Texas home to the nearest city where she is taken in by a squad of all black hard femmes who steal bikes and domme white boys out of their secret underground lair. The audience gets a unapologetic glimpse into everyone’s daily lives—from house booty, dyke drama, early clients, bike heists, nail fetishes and mango flavored pussies. It explores a radical Afro-futuristic fantasy where black queer femmes are centered and portrayed in a way that feels honest and exists without fetishization and objectification. Cruising is a 1980 psycho-sexual thriller written and directed by William Friedkin and starring Al Pacino. The film deals with a serial killer targeting gay men, in particular those associated with the leather scene. “The film proves to be an entertaining and (for those born too late to enjoy the sexual excesses of pre-AIDS gay life) fascinating if ridiculous glimpse into gay life – albeit Hollywood’s version of gay life . . . the film is now part of queer history and a testament to how a frightened Hollywood treated a disenfranchised minority writes Critic Raymond Murray (queers lead a direct action campaign to disturb the filming of the movie too!).

SCREENING x THE VOLATILE DEN: THE HONEYMOON KILLERS (1969)
Martha, an embittered nurse, doesn’t mind if her toupee-wearing boyfriend Ray romances and fleeces other women, as long as he takes her along on his con jobs. The Honeymoon Killers is a gritty American crime film written and directed by Leonard Kastle, and starring Shirley Stoler and Tony Lo Bianco. It is inspired by the true story of Raymond Fernandez and Martha Beck, the notorious “lonely hearts killers” of the 1940s. The soundtrack is from the first movement of the 6th Symphony and a section of the 5th Symphony of Gustav Mahler. The Honeymoon Killers has become classic of American independent cinema.

Join us at 8:30pm on Wednesday, 29th July 2015, for an evening of Japanese New Wave cinema at the Rosemont underpass just west of St. Denis: we will be just off the bike path north of the train tracks in Rosemont, just next to 5795 av. De Gaspe.
The sweltering Tokyo summer serves as the setting for GOOD-FOR-NOTHING (1960), a stunningly photographed riff on the “bad youth” genre that gripped audiences living in the spiritual and material ruins of postwar, post-Occupation Japan. Shooting in razor-sharp B&W and cutting with sly, deadpan wit, Yoshida Kijū – arguably the most formally rigorous of Japan’s New Wave directors – plays out his love story between an independent-minded woman and a sensitive nihilistic hunk as a series of cons and games, probing the boundaries between impersonation and identity, imitation and reality, the jokey and the deadly serious as it builds to its rivetingly tense conclusion. An underseen classic of New Wave cinema that echoes Godard’s BREATHLESS despite being released simultaneous to that film, GOOD-FOR-NOTHING seedily, stylishly celebrates a summer gloriously misspent, asking, what else is summer—and youth—good for? And answering: nothing.

SYMBIOPSYCHOTAXIPLASM (1968)
A screening of William Greaves' 1968 docu-drama SYMBIOPSYCHOTAXIPLASM. At the time of the film's release, distribution channels were reluctant to back Greaves' visionary work due to its bizarre nature, and so it disappeared for over 30 years. Steve Buscemi and Steven Soderbergh re-discovered and re-distributed this masterpiece in 2001, and we look forward to experiencing it with you! In collaboration with "Improvisation, Collective Action, and the Arts of Activism", a colloquium that brings together "activists, artists, and scholars to critically interrogate the idea(l)s of autonomy, freedom, and agency that are central to neoliberal cultural formations and to the modes of collective action that contest those formations."

Screening: Harun Farocki, Ernste Spiele I-IV (Serious Games I-IV), 2010
The four-part, two-channel installation Ernste Spiele immerses viewers into demonstrations of video gaming systems that were initially conceived in the military, who now fund its reappropriation for use not only in training, but also in treating veterans’ PTSD. The images initially wielded to impel participants towards violence are later called upon to repair the consequences of that same violence. Farocki invites viewers to observe these simulated realities that, whether weaponized or anesthetized, reorganize participants’ sensory orientations towards violent conflict. Farocki urges us to consider these images’ relationship to gaming-as-entertainment and the aesthetic economies that structure our perceptions of war. You can experience Ernste Spiele I-IV at the MIRL from 1:30pm to 6pm, where the 40min piece will be playing on a loop.

Art + Science in Motion Short Film Festival
COTB and the Visual Voice Gallery present Art+Science in Motion short film festival featuring a collection of 13 science-inspired art videos by eight international artists exploring the solar system, zooms into the microcosmos, turning sound into sight, and visualizing mathematic principles.
Highlights from the reel include three films by Charles Lindsay, the first artist in residence at the SETI Institute. Titled CARBON I, II, and III, the short films were created with a carbon-based imaging process Lindsay invented, for which he received a 2010 Guggenheim Fellowship. The film BLACK RAIN by UK artist duo Semiconductor (Ruth Jarman and Joe Gerhardt) transports us into the orbit around the Sun. The artists worked with images collected by the twin satellite solar mission Stereo, which captured visual data of solar wind and coronal mass ejections. Semiconductor's unique creative approach has won them the Smithsonian Artists Research Fellowship and NASA Space Sciences Fellowship. Australian artist Andy Thomas works with data from the Netherland's Institute for Sound and Vision. His mesmerizing animations NIGHTINGALE AND CANARY and BIRD ECHOES are particle-driven 3D abstractions reacting to the sound of bird calls.
The total length of the looped reel, which was curated by gallery owner Bettina Forget, is about half-hour. Each film is between 3 and 6 minutes long, which means you don't have to commit to pedalling for long stretches of time. The Art+Science in Motion short film festival takes place at Visual Voice Gallery in the last two weeks of January, from January 14 - 31, 2015.

Environmental Justice Short Films at UQAM
In collaboration with GRIP-UQÀM, COTB presents environmental justice short films *indoors* in the agora of the school's pavillon Judith-Jasmin, which is attached to Berri-UQÀM station. The screening will cover footage of the Tar Sands Healing Walk, extraction resistance at Unist'ot'en and in the Gaspésie, and more.

Picnic/Screening: Environmental Activist Short Films
In collaboration with Space Ex and Divest McGill, COTB presents a series of short documentaries made by two activist filmmakers, Moïse Marcoux-Chabot and Franklin López. The films work to increase the visibility of communities resisting the Energy East and Pacific Trails Pipelines, fracking projects in the Gaspésie, and other extraction-related environmental destruction across Turtle Island.

Projection/Potluck with Wapikoni Mobile
In collaboration with Wapikoni mobile, Radlaw McGill, and Spacexspace, COTB presents a selection of short films made by young Indigenous filmmakers with Wapikoni Mobile. A potluck and informal hang with the filmmakers and a tour of SpaceX will happen beforehand! Wapikoni Mobile is an award-winning organization that sends hi-tech mobile studios between Indigenous communities across Quebec and Canada to skill-share with Indigenous youth. To date, more than 2500 youth––from 21 communities across eight nations––have developed the skills to produce their own films and music recordings with training and equipment from the organization.
